Healthy Heart, Healthy Feet: How Are They Related?
Did you know that the state of your feet could be a window to your heart's health?
While it may seem unexpected, there’s a surprising link between our feet and our heart. Despite being located at almost opposite ends of the body, they have a connection that can provide valuable insights into our cardio-vascular system.
But how? Let’s explore…
The Foot-Heart Connection
One reason your feet can develop problems, is because they’re quite a hike away from your heart! The heart's primary function is to circulate blood throughout the body, so, for example, with conditions such as peripheral arterial disease, which restricts blood flow to the limbs, it puts extra strain on the heart's pumping. As a result, this reduced blood flow (which then must travel all the way down to your feet) can lead to significant discomfort and foot conditions.
Signs to Watch Out For
While not in all cases, it’s possible that your feet may be trying to tell you something about your heart. Changes in colour, temperature or unusual sensations in your feet, as well as persistent swelling or discomfort, could all be warning signs of underlying heart issues - which is why being attentive to even minor changes in your feet is crucial.
The Role of Regular Podiatry Appointments
At the New Milton Foot Clinic, our team of experienced podiatrists are dedicated to providing personalised care and expert guidance to help you maintain healthy feet.
We take the time to really get to know your feet, conducting thorough examinations and a neurovascular check for all new patients to examine your foot health and identify any potential signs of serious health issues, including those that could be related to the heart. From routine annual foot check-ups to advanced treatments for minor to severe foot conditions, we offer a range of comprehensive services to address your unique needs and concerns – putting both your feet and overall health in good hands.
Proactive Steps and Prevention
Whilst it may sound a little overplayed and cliché, taking proactive steps can go a long way in promoting foot and heart health. If able, start by prioritising regular light exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight and a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains to encourage circulation, reduce strain and provide the nutrients your heart needs to properly function.
From regular foot care and podiatry visits to adopting healthier habits and routines, small lifestyle changes can make all the difference in keeping your heart and feet in tip-top shape.
